Park of the Week: Ra Rock, 904 Heyward St.
RA Park, which is located in the Olympia community at 904 Heyward St, features an over sized "rock" (sandstone pillar) that displays the painting of an Egyptian. This "pocket park" also includes two benches and picnic tables.
Richard Lane, a South Carolina artist, painted a mural depicting the Egyptian sun god along with various symbols and hieroglyphs on the rock in 1993, according to Atlas Obscura.
The pillar or rock was left over after an old railroad trestle was demolished in 1989.
Some symbols on the rock translate into the titles of Beatles songs "Here Comes the Sun" and "All You Need is Love."
Lane said (in 1993) that he liked the fresh colors but looked forward to the effect the weather would play on them, making it look more in line with the age of the trestle.

July is Park & Recreation Month
City of Columbia Residents Invited to Discover City Parks
Month-long celebration includes Passport Challenge
Summer is here, which means it’s time to get out and discover the great things happening at your local parks and recreation centers. This July, explore the local parks and recreation system with the Columbia Parks & Recreation Department as we celebrate Park and Recreation Month, A Lifetime of Discovery.
Playgrounds, rec centers, sports leagues, summer camps are just a few of the things that come to mind when we think of parks and recreation. But, parks and recreation is so much more than that. During Park and Recreation Month, discover all the ways parks and recreation can improve quality of life, like senior programs; innovative health and wellness opportunities; community celebrations; outdoor education; flood mitigation; maintenance; and more.
“Our parks and recreations centers are the hubs of activity in a community, from playing on a basketball court to learning about the history of the Columbia Canal,” Columbia Parks & Recreation Director Randy Davis said. “We provide spaces for seniors to exercise or fellowship together, programs where children can learn a new skill in computing or opportunities for the public to learn about local watersheds.”
“We encourage everyone to visit a City park to learn how Parks & Recreation plays a major role in one’s quality of life and is key to a thriving community,” Davis said.
The department is celebrating Park and Recreation Month, an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), by inviting citizens to explore various City parks through a citywide Passport Challenge. Participants can complete the passport by answering a series of questions related to the features or history of a park or facility.
The Passport to Columbia’s Parks is available online to download here. Passports are also available at the Parks & Recreation Department administration office (inside Earlewood Park), 1111 Recreation Drive, Columbia, SC, 29201.
Completed passports must be turned in to the department’s administration office Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The first 100 participants to complete a passport and submit it will earn a prize. All completed passports will be entered in a drawing for a Grand Prize. Only one entry per person will be accepted.
Completed passports will be collected through Tuesday, July 31 at 5 p.m. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, August 1 via the department’s social media account @ColaSCParksRec on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
Participants under the age of 16 should be accompanied by an adult while completing the Passport Challenge. Challenge participants must follow all park rules, including all posted park hours.
Participants are encouraged to take a #parkselfie and share it with the department using the hashtags: #playexploregrow and #DiscoverJuly.

Memorial Park was dedicated in November 1986 along with the unveiling of the South Carolina Vietnam Monument. It is the largest monument of its type outside of Washington, D.C.
The Vietnam Monument features two granite walls that are inscribed with the names of 980 South Carolinians who died in Vietnam.
The park also includes monuments honoring the USS Columbia warship and those that served with her during WWII; the China-Burma-India Theater Veterans of WWII; the 25 men from South Carolina who died during the Pearl Harbor attack; the 6 million Holocaust victims and survivors; the men and women serving in the Korean War; Gold Star families; and the latest memorial—“The Sailor.”
“The Sailor” is a bronze statue honoring all South Carolinians who served in the United States Navy. The statue was unveiled on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2014. The statue is a gift from Columbia native Henry W. Crede, 91, who now lives in Boston. The statute, which was created by Camden artist Maria Kirby-Smith, is in memory of Crede’s shipmates who were killed during the war.
In 2015, the South Carolina Memorial Park Commission unveiled a bronze War Dogs Monument at Memorial Park. The monument is a representation of a Vietnam infantryman and his loyal canine companion. The kneeling solider is about seven feet tall and weighs 1,400 pounds. The statue of the dog is four feet tall and weighs 300 pounds.
The property is bordered by Hampton, Gadsden, Washington and Wayne Streets and is one block south of Finlay Park.
The park has a water fountain next to the Vietnam Memorial but there are no bathrooms. There is a creek running through the park with a small bridge over it and lots of birds for the kids to chase.
